It is a land of legends passed down through the generations by word of mouth. Folk songs eulogising ancestors, the brave deeds of warriors and traditional heroes; poetic love songs immortalising ancient tragic love stories; Gospel songs that touch your soul (should you be religious) or modern tunes rendered exquisitely to set your feet a-tapping are all part of life here.
Each of the exotic hill State’s 16 odd tribes and sub-tribes can easily be distinguished by the colourful and intricately designed costumes, jewellery, and beads that they adorn. The current generation of Nagas has made a significant foray into fashion design, reproducing fabrics that combine ancestral motifs with modern appeal. It is, indeed, a beautiful blend of the past and the present, a haven for those interested in fashion design. This is an affluent East Coast fashion station.
The multicoloured spears and daos decorated with dyed goats hair, the headgear made of finely woven bamboo interlaced with orchid stems, adorned with boar’s teeth and hornbill feathers, and elephant tusk armlets are all awe-inspiring sights to behold. To wear these items, every warrior used to have to earn them through acts of valour.
Nature couldn’t have been nicer to Nagaland, also known as the “Switzerland of the East”; the exquisitely picturesque landscapes, the vibrantly coloured sunrise and sunset, the lush and verdant flora, this is a land of unimaginable beauty, perfectly shaped for a breath-taking experience.
Its people are of Indo-Mongoloid descent, whose forefathers subsisted on nature’s bounty and were endowed with tough, formidable personalities. Above all, the people in this town are friendly and welcoming.
Nagaland has a pleasant climate all year and is accessible at any time of year. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life, this is the place to be. Life here is laidback and slow, making for a stress-free existence.
Nagaland is an ideal place for trekking, rock climbing, and jungle camping, and offers limitless exploration possibilities in its lush and verdant subtropical rain forests, which are also a treasure trove of medicinal plants.
