Nagaland is almost entirely populated by 16 Tibeto-Burmese tribes. Angamis, Aos, Konyaks, Kukis, Lothas, Semas, and Wanchus are among them.
The Nagas, who were once head hunters, were known for their ferocity and frequent raids on Assam and Burma. Because the enemy’s animated soul, Waha, was found at the nape of the neck, the warring tribes believed that it could only be set free once beheaded. However, because the spritual soul, mio, resided in the head and brought good fortune, enemy heads (as well as those of deceased comrades) were prized because they could be added to a community’s own store of dead ancestors.
Stone walls surround the hilltop villages. The morung, or meeting house, serves as a boy’s dormitory, stores weapons, and once displayed the spoils of war, i.e. enemy heads. The massive sacred drum, which stands by each morung, is carved from a tree trunk in the shape of a buffalo head.
