Overview

The Kalimpong district, located at an elevation of 1300 metres in the eastern part of the Darjeeling Himalayas, was formed on 14 February 2017 after splitting from the Darjeeling district as West Bengal’s 21st district. Kalimpong Municipality has 23 wards and three community development blocks: Kalimpong I, Kalimpong II, and Gorubathan, each with 42 gramme panchayats. The allure of the mighty Himalayas, the pristine beauty of the Dooars, dense virgin flora, enchanting valleys and meadows, and, of course, the perennially shining but chilling weather have all contributed to the district of Kalimpong being listed as one of the most important tourist destinations in the Eastern Himalayas. Kalimpong is home to the most diverse orchid, cactus, and ornamental plant species.
