Overview

Punjab, a state bordering Pakistan, is the spiritual home of India’s Sikhs. Harmandir Sahib, the holiest gurdwara, is located in Amritsar, which was founded in the 1570s by Sikh Guru Ram Das (Sikh place of worship). It is a major pilgrimage site known in English as the Golden Temple and surrounded by the Pool of Nectar. Durgiana Temple, a Hindu shrine famous for its engraved silver doors, is also located in Amritsar.
