Overview

Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bordered by the state of Tamil Nadu in the southeast. The French Quarter, with its tree-lined streets, mustard-colored colonial villas, and chic boutiques, preserves the city’s French heritage. A seaside promenade runs along the Bay of Bengal, passing several statues, including a 4-meter-tall Gandhi Memorial.
