Overview

Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in the coastal state of Kerala in southwest India. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbour, allowing Arab, Chinese, and European merchants to trade there. Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and a variety of houses of worship, is one example of these influences. Kochi’s cantilevered Chinese fishing nets have been in use for centuries.
