Overview

The district of Baramulla, also known as Varmul in Kashmiri, is one of the 20 districts in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This district’s administrative headquarters is in Baramulla. The district had a land area of 4,588 km2 (1,771 sq mi) in 2001 but it had shrunk to 4,243 km2 (1,638 sq mi) at the time of the 2011 census. The district administration stated in 2016 that the area was 4,190 km2 (1,620 sq mi). Muslims account for approximately 98% of the population, with Shia Muslims accounting for 30-35% and Sunni Muslims accounting for 65-70%.
